Farewell to Jim Searle

On the 22nd August sailors from near and far joined together with Jim’s family to celebrate his life. Born in the Isle of Wight , this is where he learnt his skills as a Boat Builder and Sailor. after military service he went on to do teacher training. Then in 1970 he came to Norfolk where he was appointed sailing adviser by Norfolk County Council. He lead from the front by doing his coaches training and qualified as a coach under the then new RYA Dinghy training scheme. Under his leadership many children learnt to sail, also bringing in adult courses starting at RYA Level 2 though to Instructor and Coach. Many were invited to the Solent by Jim to experience sailing on tidal waters.

When he retired, both Jim & Jill joined Rollesby Broad Sailing Club, where they raced successfully in their Wayfarer. In 2001 Jim was elected commodore he also took groups from Rollesby to sail the waters of the Solent while staying at his beloved IoW.

Jim would always have time for a chat and to tell a tale or two. The celebration ended with people who had sailed with Jim telling of their memories and bringing a smile too all who were able to attend the Service.

If you new Jim, but no longer live in locally, and have a tale to tell please let us know.
