Rollesby Broad New Year’s Day Open

Sixteen boats came to the line for the first start of Rollesby Broad’s Annual New Year’s Day Open. One or two others elected to stay ashore whilst one or two more wished they had!

It was a day for fighting upwind and flying back downwind. Two visitors from Oulton Broad made the most of being the fastest craft one the water to escape from the fleet in all three races. Richard Fryer led throughout race one in his RS300 closely pursued by Jamie Freeman in his RSAero; this pair pulled out a commanding lead with Freeman taking handicap honours. In the chasing pack there was much place changing and more than a few capsizes, with Robert Hawkins sailing his Solo in to third place.

The sight of white horses galloping down the broad reduced the fleet to 12 for race 2, though all who ventured forth completed the course. Freeman was in superb form, port tacking the fleet at the start and taking off at amazing speed downwind for a comfortable victory. Hawkins was enjoying the less crowded conditions in the middle of the fleet, chasing the Lasers and Wayfarers to take second from John Saddington & Dennis Manning (Wayfarer) who somehow recovered to take third place despite starting well over a minute behind the fleet.

After a well earned lunch, fatigue began to kick in and there were quite a few retirees during race three as the wind slightly more! Freeman continued where he left off in the morning with another win; Saddington & Manning took second and with Fryer third this meant a three way tie (with Hawkins) for second overall, all counting a second and a third place. So it came down to discarded results to break the tie in Fryer’s favour.

Overall Results: (top five, 16 entries)

1st Jamie Freeman (WOBYC) RS Aero, 2pts
2nd Richard Fryer (WOBYC) RS300, 5pts
3rd John Saddington & Dennis Manning (RBSC) Wayfarer, 5pts
4th Robert Hawkins (RBSC) Solo, 5pts
5th Dave Houghton & Will Pook (RBSC) Wayfarer, 9pts

New Year Regatta

Christmas and New Year Sailing

RBSC – NOTE FROM THE COMMODORE – WINTER SAILING

Those of us who enjoy the winter sailing have been having fun out on the water.. We have had   turn outs this year of over twenty boats and some good days with fresh winds blowing down the length of the broad.

This is just a reminder that the club continues to operate through the festive season. Next Sunday the 21st is for normal winter series racing.

The following Sunday the 28th December is a special one off morning, with a pursuit race starting at 10.45.  The race will last for 72 minutes for the slowest boat with the winner presented with the prestigious silver Bent Vase and prizes for the runners up.

Following the pursuit race we will run a short 30 minute race for the Watson Cup. This is for double handed boats which are to be sailed by the helm only – a bit of fun for the competitors and the spectators !  Angie will be coming to provide lunch and we hope to see many of you there– a bit of fresh air between Xmas and New year festivities !

On the 1st Jan we have,of course, the popular New Years Day Regatta so another good time for some fresh air – normal start times.

Don’t forget to invite your friends!

Winter regatta – Rollesby 7/12/14

ianayresA cold very breezy forecast may have put off some, but a day of close racing was enjoyed by those who ventured afloat at Rollesby on Sunday 7th for their Winter Regatta.

A very select group of multisails set out but 3 of the 4 led at various times of the day. In the end it was the ladies Auriel Gibson & Lindsey Nettleton who won out with some good spinnaker work and two victories. Carl Buck & crew could have won in the club boat but an enforced retirement when leading race 1 followed by a lunchtime departure meant their win in race 2 went unrewarded. Barry Bradford and Dennis Manning were still getting to grips with the asymmetric in their Argo but sailed consistently to take second overall.

There was significantly more competition in the single handed fleet, which ultimately saw 4 competitors finish on the same points for second to fifth places. It was not a day when the Solos had it all their own way, the fleet took some time to sort itself out in to handicap order in all races! Ian Ayres in his Solo was the only slower boat to make the eventual break with the faster pack and won though only just from the fast disappearing RS300 of David Houghton, with Nick Eastwood finishing third after a tight on the water battle with the Phantom of Chris Toothill. Daren Pike brought his Phantom out to play in race 2, escaped the pile up at the first mark and sailed away to victory by some margin, Ayres and Bob Hawkins exchanged places several times at the head of the main group with Ayres eventually second and Eastwood splitting the Solos on handicap.

A significantly reduced fleet after lunch was led away by Toothill who surely had enough lead until a capsize brought him back to the pack. Daniel Bradford in a Laser Radial coped best as the wind increased narrowly edging out Hawkins for the race victory and ensuring the race officer a headache in separating out the minor places!
