Report from December 10th

Race report Sunday 10th

Members arrived on a wet cold morning to find the Broad largely sheltered from the Easterly breeze by the trees. Ten boats sailed, in the rain with a single start, on a course with planning lifts on one side of the water and drifting conditions on the other.
In the first race Nick Eastwood, in his Finn, lead the way round, but on the corrected results the win went to Dave Houghton and John Symonds in their Wayfarer just four second ahead of the Solo of Matt Boreham with John Saddington in another Solo a further eight second behind.
The marks were moved for the second race and the faster boats pulled ahead with the Wayfarer gaining a substantial win against the Finn in second and Keith Sykes in his Laser third.

Winter Regatta Report

As a forerunner to its winter series, Rollesby Broad Sailing Club held its Winter Regatta on Sunday.  Unfortunately, the forecasted winds never reached the Broad so sailors had to contend with some light and shifty winds.

In the multisail fleet the top two places were clear cut with John Saddington and Dennis Manning in their Albacore winning all three races and Val and Chris Hanson in their Wayfarer finishing second in each.  Third place overall was closely contended with Mike Broadbent and Hugh Rout in a Xenon and Bob Sparrow and Mike Horwitz in a Wayfarer equal on points after the first two races.  In the final race, the Wayfarer kept ahead of the Xenon throughout the race and therefore claiming third place overall.

The larger single-hander fleet had an entry of fifteen dinghies ranging from a RS300 to a group of five Solos.  After two races, three boats were vying for overall honours, with Tamsin Highfield in her Streaker on three points and the Solos of Jim Rosser and Sam McNamara on four and five, respectively.  In the final and deciding race Chris Toothill, sailing a Phantom, led from start to finish on the water but close behind were the Solos of Jim Rosser and Sam McNamara. Approaching the final mark, Jim suffered a ‘navigational malfunction’ allowing Sam to slip pass.  This made the final points interesting, with three boats equal on three points and so the overall places were decided by the last race making Sam McNamara the winner.

26th November Report & Pics

End of Autumn Series – 26th November

The chill in the wind at Rollesby Broad on Sunday 26th November certainly made it feel like winter is approaching even though this was actually the climax of our Autumn series.

The breeze wouldn’t quite shift southwards enough (until the afternoon!) to avoid having to sail at least part of the course under the tricky conditions to leeward of the trees on the west bank of the broad. Whilst it was marginal planning on the windier east side, it was the rounding of the windward marks which separated the top contenders from the rest.

Mike McNamara in his Harrier won both the singlehanded races, working hard in race 1 to stay as close as possible to Darren Pike’s Phantom and then just (and really only just!) pulling out enough of a lead from Bob Hawkins Solo in race two. Ian Ayres (Solo) sailed consistently to take the minor podium spots in both races.

John Saddington & Dennis Manning found the conditions absolutely to their liking in their Albacore; winning comfortably in the multsail fleet and the afternoon mixed fleet race. Behind there was a really close battle for second between the Wayfarers of Val & Chris Hanson and Dave Houghton & John Symonds; the Hanson’s narrowly took the honours in race 1 with the roles reversed all be it with slightly more separation in race 2.

There were four different winners across the five Autumn Series; we can’t really do much better at spreading out the silver ware / wine than that! The club has its winter regatta on Sunday 3rd and its NewYear’s Open on Jan 1st, visitors welcome at both events, first races at 10.45 on both days.

Solo Open Report and Results

Rollesby Broad hosted their annual Solo open on Sunday 23rd April. Ten visitors joined eight home boats for some very close racing (the first three all finishing with 5 points). Winds were light and variable early on before settling to the predicted south westerly by the start of the second of four races, increasing in strength during the day.

Local sailor Ian Ayres led at the first mark in race 1 with Steve Ede from Ardleigh in close pursuit, Alan Bishop from Girton joined these two on the first run as they pulled away from the pack. Matthew Frary and Sam Woodcock from Norfolk Broads took a gamble up the second main beat, and as the wind swung around trying to settle, Jarvis Simpson from Brightlingsea joined this very close top pack. Bishop showed his usual downwind speed on the last run to win from Ede and Frary.

Ede and Ayres made the best starts in race 2 at the leeward end of the line, with Frary best from the windward end. Frary and Ede pulled away into a strong lead with a large pack closing on Ayres as the fleet ran back down the broad. Frary held on to win, with Woodcock coming through to third from behind a very closely packed bunch on the final run.

After lunch there was the breeze was steadier and a little stronger, Ede led race 3 from start closely pursued by Robert Hawkins from Hickling. Ede went on to finish with the biggest lead of the day as places behind changed regularly, Bishop and Frary eventually proving their worth finishing nose to tail in second and third as five boats finished overlapped!

This meant the meeting was still wide open going into race 4. Frary narrowly led from Woodcock at the windward end of the broad. Woodcock chose to luff Ede down the long run on the less windy side of the broad allowing the low sailing Bishop through in to second, Giles Bradford (Hickling) led the rest of the fleet, with the front four some distance away. Bishop and Ede closed significantly on Frary on the last lap but he held on for the win to produce a three way tie on points. This led to some head scratching in the race box but a quick check of the rules gave the meeting to Frary with Ede second and Bishop third. Couldn’t have started the Solo Eastern series with a closer result, which bodes well for a competitive season…

Spring Regatta Report

The spring weather was certainly in force as Rollesby held their Spring Regatta on Sunday 2nd April marking, turnout was a splendid 21 boats as winter members marked their last event of the season and with just a single mixed handicap fleet, starting well was essential.

In race 1 Tamsin Highfield (Laser) was uncomfortably close to the pin mark but just snuck round it chased hard by Bob Hawkins (Solo) and Ian & Sharon Ayres (Leader). These three read the first beat best and whilst joined by faster boats round the course had established enough of a lead on lap one to ensure the podium places; Hawkins eventually using his superior upwind manoeuvrability to take the win.

A windshift just before the start of race 2 saw the Wayfarers of Pete & Rachel Smith and Bob Sparrow & Jason able to reach the first mark in a single tack. Simon Strode (Solo) followed them well to finish third with only Hawkins able to make some sort of recovery on the considerably shorter course to take fourth.

The meeting was wide open as more breeze greeted the fleet for race 3. The Ayres started well to windward of the majority with Highfield emerging best from the leeward end of the line. The Solos of Hawkins and Strode worked their way through well on the upwind legs with the Smiths enjoying the increased breeze most taking their time but taking places on nearly every leg of the course, eventually Hawkins took the win over Highfield by a handful of seconds.

Rollesby 19th March Report

Upright is faster than horizontal – well mostly! There was certainly enough wind to cause several of the more wary to remain ashore at Rollesby Broad on the 19th March, and with capsizes before the racing started they were certainly justified. In the event the wind dropped slightly mid race 1 encouraging more launches to ‘play’ in the gusts and a larger turnout for race 2 before the last few squalls sent even the hardiest to shore for lunch and an early end to the day.

In the Single-handers it was a case of staying upright gets round the course faster even if your boat is naturally slower. Chris Toothill (Phantom) did eventually manage to get to the right point of the fleet, showing some terrific downwind speed, but could never get far enough away from the Solo of Ian Ayres and the Radial of Keith Sykes on handicap. Race 2 saw Bob Hawkins (Solo) join the fray and he led narrowly at the end of the first beat from Toothill and Ayres; after Toothill joined the multiple bathing brigade the two Solo’s enjoyed a very close race, gaining or losing depending who was most under control. Eventually Ayres made the break on the final run, Sykes recovered best of the rest to take third.

A little more stability meant fewer swims but still some rapid sailing in the multisails; John Saddington and Dennis Manning put their Wayfarer in front and stayed there all day! Bob Sparrow and Tony Gibbs decided to use their jib rather than genoa and whilst competitive upwind lost out on the return legs. In both races it was the Vareo of the Highfield’s which took second, Phil recovered well from a poor start (he blamed technical issues) in race one, whilst Tamsin’s speed was limited in race 2 due to Phil tearing the spinnaker!

New Years Day Report

Rollesby Broad New Year Open 2017

The dubious weather forecast probably reduced the overall turnout as just two visiting RS300s joined the home turnout of 20 on New Year’s Day at Rollesby Broad. In the event those who stayed all day enjoyed a cracking sail with significantly different conditions between the morning and afternoons races.

Race officer Jon Sallis was keen to get racing started before the early morning south westerly wind disappeared and the forecast mist and drizzle took over. Visitor Richard Fryer quite rightly led the way round; he was closely followed, to the wrong first mark by David Frary in his Finn and these two merged with John Saddington & Dennis Manning in their Albacore and Ian Ayres in his Solo to create the top four both on the water and handicap as they pulled out a large lead on pack; many of whom were also suffering a navigation hangover! Ayres took the win by a considerable margin with Saddington second and Frary third, despite finishing behind these two on the water, with Fryer first visitor in fourth.

As the wind died and the mist rolled in the postponement flag was raised and the outstanding catering team went in to full action to provide lunch an hour earlier than initially expected. A good call by the race team as right on forecast the cold (and it certainly was) front arrived at 1 pm and after a brief heavy shower the wind settled in a northerly direction at a good force 3 with stronger gusts.

A somewhat biased first leg saw 5 of the probable front runners called over the line allowing Jamie Freeman (RS300) to narrowly lead Ayres and Matt Boreham (Laser) round the first mark. Freeman then disappeared into a large lead. The stronger conditions suited the Lasers as Stuart Highfield joined Ayres and Boreham in leading the pack. Despite some good recoveries none of the early starters could pull back sufficient time and after nearly ‘putting it in’ at the windward mark Ayres beat Boreham by just 12 seconds with Highfield third and Freeman in the first visitors spot of fourth.

A significantly reduced fleet started the last race as the wind stayed and the temperature dropped further! The two visiting RS300s were starting to enjoy themselves with Freeman eventually gaining enough of a lead to take fourth again; the other single-handers were working a very similar pattern to race 2 and this time Boreham got the upper hand by 9 seconds! So Ayres collected the penalty of the dreaded Binacle Trophy and will need to invest in extra brass polish for 2017…..
